    Description

In November 1984, Piedmont Airlines inaugurated its first ever service to San Francisco.  This lot features a cover that was flown on the inaugural Boeing 737 Piedmont flight from its hub in Dayton to the new Piedmont city of San Francisco.  The envelope is postmarked November 1, 1984, in Dayton, and flown on the inaugural flight from Dayton to San Francisco.  The envelope was backstamped upon arrival in San Francisco.  The cover is in excellent condition, and both the postmark and the backstamp are fully legible.  Cachets were not authorized for the new service, and, consequently, properly flown covers are very hard to find.  Authentically flown covers must bear the correct postmark and backstamp.  The cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalogue as PI-D89Wf.  The AAMC reports that ONLY 62 pieces of mail were dispatched on the first flight from Dayton.  Be one of a very select group, a maximum of 62 people on the entire planet to own one.
