1987 PIEDMONT AIRLINES FIRST CLASS -inaugural season in-flight menu
- This 6" x 11.75" in-flight menu was distributed by Piedmont Airlines in 1987 to passengers in the airline's very first season offering First-Class service to its customers.
Started in 1961 as Henson Airlines, the airline was rebranded in 1993 to re-use the name of Piedmont Airlines (existing from 1948 until 1989), one of the predecessors of today's American Airlines, to protect the brand.
The airline was formed in 1961 by Richard A. Henson as Henson Aviation, and Henson began one of the world's first code sharing arrangements in 1967. It initially developed a route structure serving Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In 1983, Piedmont Aviation bought Henson Airlines and re-branded the airline as "Henson, The Piedmont Regional Airline." Under Piedmont's control, the airline expanded rapidly, particularly in Florida. Both were purchased by the USAir Group in 1987 with Piedmont absorbed two years later. The Piedmont name was resurrected in 1993, when USAir renamed Henson to "Piedmont Airlines", to protect the Piedmont brand name, which could be used by others if not exercised in trade use for a period of time.
This 6" x 11.75", four-page menu dates to 1987, when First-Class service was in it's inaugural year of existence on Piedmont, having been announced in late 1986. A coated paper cover leads to a welcome message on the first page from the airline's CEO, William G. McGee. Page Two features six different wines available on the flight with the in-flight First Class meal. Page Three lists the passenger's choices for a five-course meal served with linen and silverware on porcelain plates. Choices on this 1987 flight include: lobster medallions, shrimp salad, tossed salad, and an entree choice of Chicken Wellington, Surf & Turf, or Poached Salmon Steak, followed by an apple torte for dessert.
There is a tiny area of surface paper missing from the top corner of the cover along with a slight handling crease on the bottom corner. Along with unobtrusive handling marks and spots on the back cover, none detract from page turning or display potential. Interior pages are clean with some expected age yellowing.
This relic of 1980's luxury travel would make an excellent addition to any airline, air travel, Piedmont Airlines, or in-flight menu collection.
