    Description

In December 1987, Piedmont Airlines inaugurated its first ever service to Phoenix and San Diego, from its hub in Charlotte.  The Boeing 737 flight flew Charlotte-Phoenix-San Diego.  This lot features a cover flown on that inaugural flight.  The envelope is postmarked December 8, 1987, at the special mail facility located at Charlotte Airport, and flown on the inaugural flight from Charlotte to Phoenix.  The envelope was backstamped upon arrival in Phoenix.    The cover is in very good condition, and both the postmark and the backstamp are legible.  Philatelic treatment for the new service was not sought, cachets were not used, and properly flown covers are RARE.  Covers are authenticated solely by having the correct postmark and backstamp.  The cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalogue as PI-D121Wf.  The AAMC does not record how many covers were flown, but the AAMC Catalogue value is consistent with approximately 25 being flown.  Nice first flight cover from Piedmont flight from 35 years ago.  Also, please note the stamp used on the envelope, Scott Catalogue 2327, part of the wildly popular and highly collectible set of 50 American Wildlife stamps issued in 1987.
