Some pieces have bark but you can remove it with a flat screwdriver and hammer or something if you want.
Some say bark can add too much bitterness, others say they can't taste any difference.
Serious BBQ joints down South don't remove any bark and neither do some pre packaged brands.
These are mostly large chunks that won't burn away quickly if you want to smoke something for a while, can also easily split them smaller if needed probably with just a flat screwdriver and hammer. Can soak them in water, bourbon, tequila, wine, apple juice, etc to burn slower and add extra flavors.
Tree had zero rot, lichen or issues. It was chopped down to avoid a new puppy possibly chewing black walnuts which are toxic to dogs. No chemicals were sprayed on or near this tree and only organic lawn fertilizer was used around it. Logs were cut with canola oil in chainsaw instead of regular petroleum-based bar & chain lubricant. Then hand split with a hatchet and thus no possible gas/oil leaks from a machine log splitter.
Cut in Fall 2020 and dried under a porch.
"Black Walnut creates a very strong wood smoke and provides intense flavor on the short side of bitter."
"Black Walnut is actually a pretty good wood to use for smoking. It's flavour can be quite strong if used on its own, but a few chunks mixed with a milder wood works good."
"While pecan is hickory's milder cousin, black walnut is the strong one. Often mixed with lighter woods like almond, pear or apple, can be bitter if used alone. An intense smoke that is slightly bitter like walnuts. Can easily overpower poultry."
