Description

On July 15, 1983, Piedmont inaugurated operations at its new Baltimore hub operating out of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.  On the same day Piedmont inaugurated service from the new hub to the brand-new Piedmont city of Hartford, CT.  This lot features a cover that was flown on the inaugural flight from Baltimore to Hartford.  Philatelic recognition of the new service was not requested, cachets were not used, and, consequently, properly flown covers are scarce.  The cover was backstamped upon arrival of the inaugural flight at Bradley Field, Windsor Locks, CT.  The cover is in excellent condition, and both the postmark and the backstamp are fully legible.  Properly flown covers are determined solely by having the correct postmark and backstamp. The cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalogue as PI-D70N.  The cover is scarce, as the AAMC reports that only 137 pieces of mail were dispatched on the first flight from Baltimore.  Also, one final consideration, I used high quality 100% rag content envelopes when I serviced my first flight covers and they withstand the passage of time much better than regular envelopes.  Note how beautifully white the envelope is.  Be one of a very select group, a maximum of 137 people, to own one.
