    Description

Vintage fold-out Standard Oil Company 1926 road map of New York, printed more than 94 years ago.
The map opens up to 22" x 28" and has great detail on old highway alignments and road surfaces, with cartography by the General Drafting Company.
A large inset shows lower New York and Long Island.
Additional insets show Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Troy, Utica, and the metropolitan New York City area, where the Holland Tunnel is shown as "under construction."
The map also labels the fictitious town of "Agloe" — a "copyright trap" placed on maps compiled by the General Drafting Company. The purpose behind using this nonexistent town was to reveal if rival mapmakers were copying the information.
The name "Agloe" was a scramble of the initials of Otto G. Lindberg (founder of the General Drafting Company) and his assistant Ernest Alpers. They located the town at a dirt-road intersection north of Roscoe, in the Catskills.
There are also tables listing mileages along selected routes and "Common Sense Rules of the Road" by
    The Veteran Motorist
, including illustrations of hand signals.
This map was published in 1926 by the Standard Oil Company of New York, 26 Broadway and is dated on the cover. The handsome cover graphics include a touring car, motor oil can, and Socony's distinctive bubble-top gasoline pump.
